French Press Coffee
When I want a simple cup or two of that magical brewed caffeinated goodness, I reach for this French press brewed coffee recipe.
Ingredients:
4 cups water
1/2 cup (32 grams) good-quality whole coffee beans
Milk or cream (optional)
Sugar or preferred sweetener (optional)
Directions
Add water to a small pot and Bring water to a boil over high heat.
While the water is heating, grind your beans to a very coarse grind. With my small spice grinder using the 2-blade attachment (also comes with a 4-blade attachment), I achieved a good French press “coarse” grind at about 4 pulses for 2-3 sec each pulse. After each pulse, I stirred the beans a bit, making sure any beans that were still whole were moved to the bottom of the grinder so those remaining whole beans could get their grind on. Add the ground beans to the bottom of the French press.
Once the water reaches a boil, remove it from the heat and let it cool down a bit, maybe for 15-30 seconds, before adding it to the French press. The water should be very hot but not boiling when you pour it into the press.
Pour enough water in the French press to first wet the grinds through. Give it a quick stir so that all grinds are evenly saturated with the water. Set a time for 30 sec to let the grounds “bloom”.
Pour in the remainder of the water, then give it another quick stir so that the water is evenly dispersed. Cover with the plunger lid and reset the timer for 3 minutes to finish brewing the coffee.
I highly recommend using a timer as you do not want to over brew the coffee as it will taste bitter if it brews too long. The total brewing time will be approximately 3 ½ minutes.
Once time is up, gently press down the plunger until it is nice and tight on the bottom. Pour out the coffee immediately into your serving cup. If there is leftover coffee in the French press, pour it out into a different container to store until you’re ready to drink it.
